I am sure you will understand the pressures on parents who rely on childcare but perhaps you are not aware of the severe problems your policy will cause. As a parent, I am deeply concerned - along with many others who have joined the campaign to #SaveOurEarlyYears - about the negative impact that the Government’s decision for all Level 3 Early Years Educators (EYEs) to have at least a C grade in GCSE English and Maths will have on me. As long as nursery staff have qualifications that mean they have good English and maths, and most importantly have the passion and knowledge needed to deliver high quality care to my children, then that is what is matters. I know that childcare providers are already struggling with recruitment - and this policy is making it even harder for them to recruit. I am also worried that I will have to pay even more than I already do for childcare, taking it to a prohibitive level. This will be exacerbated if I also lose access to my entitlement of 30 hours if my childcare provider is unable to deliver it because of this policy. This is why I am supporting the #SaveOurEarlyYears campaign, which calls on you to level the playing field for the childcare sector and consider other qualifications such as Functional Skills to be accepted for EYEs. Functional Skills are recognised by the Government in other sectors, they ensure people have good English and maths, and they teach the soft skills so essential for childcare workers. This is a policy that is unfair on parents – childcare costs are already rising, and this policy will only make things worse. I do hope you will listen, and will agree to accept Functional Skills as an equivalent qualification for EYEs to count in the ratios. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
